Love it! I'm an all or nothing type of person for sure. I put everything into what I'm doing. There have been stages in my life where I wanted to just sit around and study the Word- and others where I just had a go-go mentality and served without confuring with Christ in HOW he wanted the serving to happen... K maybe more of a comment than was necessary- But totally love your "and/both" pep talk!
I read Luke 11 this morn and what jumped out at me was in vs 37-54 Jesus was super confrontational. I mean he just went to dinner at the home of someone he obviously didn't care for and then told him exactly why He didn't like them unapolagetically- while eating their food! Then left. Ya...I dunno if I should be like him in this area... HE has the right to be self-rightous. He's the Almighty God, um I'm plain sinful human... But I suppose being unafraid of confrontation would be a good thing to grasp onto... I'm enjoying your reading plan! Have a blessed day!

I was born into a family without resources. To fish I had to use an old pocket knife to cut a stick, loop on twine with a safety pin, and find some worms to throw into a coffee can with moist soil. My father left when I was 7 years old and my male role models liked many unchristian things. So in my early adulthood I vowed to have much wealth even it at the expense of others’ misfortunes. Slowly [deception is a great tool of poor choices] that road led me into a homeless existence for seven years until I gave my life to Christ. Up to that point I swindled, cheated, lied, and mooched my way though those bleak times. My way had not worked! From that moment I discovered what it meant that since I have been forgiven much I had to forgive much; since I had nothing, faith had to be instilled in me that God provides all my needs – not my wants. I thought my homelessness was a curse until I realized that God uses everything for His glory. God opened doors for me to go back to school. I had nothing but three muscles shirts, a belt, a pair of tennis shoes, two semi clean shirts, and two pair of Levis with minimal holes in them [and not really a fashion statement]. I had this old Chevy van I got running by taking a rear end I found in a field (a miracle in itself that it was the right type) and putting it in the van [yes it was barely legal by man’s standards but that was to change]. I slept in it at night hidden from the roadside while getting to the College at 6:30am, running the track and doing calisthenics in the field, going to classes until 7:30pm and staying in the library until it closed; then starting over again – a very simple plan. You see, God tells me that He can do any & every thing and that I can show others the act of having little without sniveling while God accomplished great miracles in us all. I have learned that we only need God and His instruction. And if (and I mean IF) it is God’s words and instructions I am given that it is going to all work for His glory [my ultimate test of whether I am hearing God’s will or or forcing my wants]. So Mark 6 is full of instructions to us all. Jesus is seen as someone who has all of God’s wisdom which confounds everyone since they think they need man’s teachings. His humility in finding no honor in his home town holds a great teaching for me concerning not boasting in my own house – lift up those around you with the simple things you accomplish in quiet silence & prayer. The miracles are not for us directly but for God’s glory which then blesses us and others. It takes little man-made items to do God’s work for it is God made creation which sustains us greatly – back to the stick in Mark 6:8 and stick for my fishing. I did die to my worldly ways and was reborn though Christ. He feeds me even when I can’t see where I may find my next meal. And when terrified in the chaos of this world He lifts me up to match calamity with His serenity.

Both my grandfathers were farmers. At the cost of seed the ground had to be well tilled and have the necessary nutrients for the seed purchase to be maximized. After that my maternal grandfather would say it is in God's hands. What I am getting is that I am the soil for God's seed. That means I have to prepare myself to be good soil. And while I can immerse myself in His word, gather with fellow believers, and look good - I better be matching my faith with my actions. Jumping up and down in times of trouble and acting freaky instead of just asking for God's protection then having the faith that it is provided is not matching faith with actions. I mean Jesus is handing out one parable after another going down the path -> open your ears and hear -> don’t hide the light -> share the good news -> small will become great -> have faith. Jesus will leave this Earth and the people will need (and now we will have) to walk by faith and live by prayer. FYI – think about the very first verse Mark 4:1 – Randy uses a public address system to communicate with us during Sunday’s message yet Jesus in sitting on a boat and teaching a very large group on the shore without any type of manmade system. Jesus IS a very powerful speaker WHEN I close my mouth & open my ears and LISTEN while HAVING faith my prayers ARE answered to receive the necessary understanding from God [no nouns or pronouns in all uppercase, right?]!

I come from a mixture of many nationalities that make me a mutt - a true American if you will. One of the predominant ones is Irish. When my Grandparents came from Ireland to escape the laws on poverty, over there and in England, the welcoming New York merchants placed a sign on their windows that read NINA [No Irish Need Apply]. This related to a song based upon the London signs of Irish Need Not Apply [INNA]. However, I digress. The point is that there are many who are hungry and in need. Moreover, they are being persecuted rather then lifted up and helped; my point being the Pharisees seem to enjoy a cat and mouse game of “condemn, ridicule, and torment”. I mean are they really that afraid that someone will notice their human frailty unless they can make others feel beneath them? They were so caught up in doing religious stuff they forgot the true reason for the existence of what God had created. Then Jesus comes and does things that just twist the Pharisees’ minds; they can’t get back to the place Jesus is at because they are so far from remembering the reason for the traditions they just adhere to the traditions for the sake of the tradition itself. This makes me think that they were pretty black and white with no room for grey, ace [get it – grace]! All Jesus is saying is that the Lord provides for us all. He chooses what is necessary for the statement of love and compassion He has for us all at the time it is necessary. Because Jesus is my Lord and Savior I would be a little fearful to question Jesus on matters that are for Him to decide. Hmm, kinda like the message from the first day of this study.

I love that Jesus remained focused on His mission, His purpose. He has cast out an unclean spirit, healed Peter's mother-in-law, healed many who were sick, and cast out many demons up to vs 34. He then went to a solitary place and prayed. When He was found, he purposed to go into the next towns to preach. "For this purpose I have come forth." Staying focused, staying committed, staying on course. In the midst of the striving, it is easy to forget our purpose and direction. So much easier at times stay in "town" and forget the lonely places. I am challenged to remember God's purpose in my life and to stay the course.
